Since its launch in 2010, mypension.be has grown into one of the most important digital touchpoints between the government and citizens. In 2024, 3.3 million citizens collectively visited the site some 15 million times. And that number continues to grow year after year. To accommodate this growth and prepare the platform for the future, the Federal Pension Service partnered with Kunlabora.

Kunlabora supports the Federal Pension Service with a multidisciplinary team-as-a-service. Together with the internal platform and infrastructure teams, we are working on the modernisation of mypension.be: from architecture and backend migration to deployment, scalability and security. With one important condition: ongoing development could not come to a halt.

Modernising without stopping the engine

Mypension.be is an essential platform for employees, civil servants and self-employed people in Belgium. Citizens use the portal to consult their earliest possible retirement date, manage their personal details and find up-to-date information on pension reforms. Due to increasing usage, new policy changes and the growing need for scalability, it became clear that a new technical approach was needed. The Federal Pension Service wanted to make the platform future-proof, but could not afford any standstill. New features had to keep moving forward, including those related to the political agreement on the pension bonus. So the challenge was twofold: keep the existing platform running reliably while modernising it step by step. Not with a big bang, but with a thoughtful approach that combines technical renewal with continuity, collaboration and trust.

Our approach: understand first, then modernise with focus

Kunlabora started with a thorough analysis of the existing landscape. We reviewed the codebase and architecture, spoke with stakeholders and used a service blueprint to map out the full flow. This created a shared understanding of the technical reality, user needs and ambitions of the Federal Pension Service.

Based on that analysis, we developed a plan together to modernise mypension.be step by step. We focused on two major shifts.

1. On the one hand, we are supporting the migration of the backend from .NET to Java, allowing the platform to better align with the Federal Pension Service’s existingapplication landscape.

2. On the other hand, we are helping with the move to private cloud deployment via OpenShift, bringing more automation, scalability and autonomy to the development teams.

Kunlabora provided a team-as-a-service with expertise in front-end, back-end, devops and security. Not separate consultants standing on the sidelines, but a team that thinks along, builds along and takes responsibility together.

Technical renewal with lasting impact

The modernisation of mypension.be goes beyond a technical migration. The goal is to build a solid foundation on which the platform can continue to grow in the years ahead. Today, the technical foundation has been laid. The deployment pipeline has been automated and the platform’s scalability is being validated. The migration to Java continues, on top of an architecture designed to prepare mypension.be for future policy changes, increasing usage and further digital service delivery. This approach delivers more than technical improvement alone. It gives development teams more autonomy, makes deployments more reliable and creates room to respond faster to new needs from citizens and policy.

Collaborating as one team

The collaboration between Kunlabora and the Federal Pension Service is built on shared ownership. Kunlabora works closely with the Pension Service’s internal teams and involved organisations such as Sigedis and RSVZ. Not as an external party that simply executes, but as a partner that thinks along, challenges constructively and helps build a sustainable solution.

'One team’ has been the secret ingredient behind the success of mypension.be for more than 15 years. Not business on one side and IT on the other, but side by side: dreaming, thinking, challenging each other, building and celebrating successes together. When Kunlabora was brought in to support the development of mypension.be, I was slightly sceptical at first. But after the blueprint workshop, that turned into wild enthusiasm. Together, we built a team tailored to our ambitions and values: quality, reliability and always serving citizens and their needs.”
